Ron Paul on How to Restore America – Don’t Avert the Government Shutdown!

by Ron Paul – Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity:Ron Paul

The political class breathed a sigh of relief Saturday when the US Senate averted a government shutdown by passing the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill. This year’s omnibus resembles omnibuses of Christmas past in that it was drafted in secret, was full of special interest deals and disguised spending increases, and was voted on before most members could read it.

The debate over the omnibus may have made for entertaining political theater, but the outcome was never in doubt. Most House and Senate members are so terrified of another government shutdown that they would rather vote for a 1,774-page bill they have not read than risk even a one or two-day government shutdown.

Those who voted for the omnibus to avoid a shutdown fail to grasp that the consequences of blindly expanding government are far worse than the consequences of a temporary government shutdown. A short or even long-term government shutdown is a small price to pay to avoid an economic calamity caused by Congress’ failure to reduce spending and debt.

The political class’ shutdown phobia is particularly puzzling because a shutdown only closes 20 percent of the federal government. As the American people learned during the government shutdown of 2013, the country can survive with 20 percent less government.

Instead of panicking over a limited shutdown, a true pro-liberty Congress would be eagerly drawing up plans to permanently close most of the federal government, starting with the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve’s inflationary policies not only degrade the average American’s standard of living, they also allow Congress to run up huge deficits. Congress should take the first step toward restoring a sound monetary policy by passing the Audit the Fed bill, so the American people can finally learn the truth about the Fed’s operations.

Second on the chopping block should be the Internal Revenue Service. The federal government is perfectly capable of performing its constitutional functions without imposing a tyrannical income tax system on the American people.

America’s militaristic foreign policy should certainly be high on the shutdown list. The troops should be brought home, all foreign aid should be ended, and America should pursue a policy of peace and free trade with all nations. Ending the foreign policy of hyper-interventionism that causes so many to resent and even hate America will increase our national security.

All programs that spy on or otherwise interfere with the private lives of American citizens should be shutdown. This means no more TSA, NSA, or CIA, as well as an end to all federal programs that promote police militarization. The unconstitutional war on drugs should also end, along with the war on raw milk.

All forms of welfare should be shut down, starting with those welfare programs that benefit the wealthy and the politically well connected. Corporate welfare, including welfare for the military-industrial complex that masquerades as “defense spending,” should be first on the chopping block. Welfare for those with lower incomes could be more slowly phased out to protect those who have become dependent on those programs.

The Department of Education should be permanently padlocked. This would free American schoolchildren from the dumbed-down education imposed by Common Core and No Child Left Behind. Of course, Obamacare, and similar programs, must be shut down so we can finally have free-market health care.

Congress could not have picked a worse Christmas gift for the American people than the 1,774-page omnibus spending bill. Unfortunately, we cannot return this gift. But hopefully someday Congress will give us the gift of peace, prosperity, and liberty by shutting down the welfare-warfare state.

The First American Socialists

The First American Socialists

November 25, 2014
Hot Springs, VA

The S&P is hanging around $2,070 today. Gold is checking in at $1,196. Oil is floating around $76 per barrel in anticipation of OPEC’s big meeting on Thursday. Bitcoin is still at $380 per BTC, and the 10-year Treasury rate is 2.30% today.

All remains quiet in the financial markets as we turn our attention to the wonderful holiday season upcoming. Thanksgiving is a day of family, food, and fellowship in honor of the legendary first American Thanksgiving celebrated back in the 17th century.

Most Americans are familiar with this story of the Pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together for the first Thanksgiving, but did you know the Pilgrims were the first American socialists? The Pilgrims’ original financing contract stated that all colonists would get their food, clothing, and provisions from the colony’s “common stock and goods” and any profits would go into the “common stock” for the first seven years. The agreement required each person to submit his production to the common stock and the governor was to distribute provisions out to each family according to need. There was to be no private property for at least seven years.

The Pilgrims landed in America on December 21, 1620 and the first winter wiped out half of the population. The following harvests of 1621 and 1622 were miniscule. Governor William Bradford documented the problems stating that the hardest working men found it unjust that they received no more food than the weakest workers, the young men resented working without compensation, and the wives resented doing household chores for other men who were not their husband. How dare them!

The Pilgrims wised up in 1623 and abandoned the socialist model. Governor Bradford documented the transition stating that families became very industrious once they were required to grow their own food with women and children taking on significantly more responsibilities for the family unit. Three times the amount of corn was planted once socialism was abandoned and the colonists actually exported a substantial surplus in 1624. The Pilgrims thereafter purchased back all of the colony’s stock and completed the transition to private property and free markets.

How fortunate we are that the Pilgrim’s experiment with socialism was largely forgotten over time!

What if Woodrow Wilson understood the Pilgrim’s story? There would be no Federal Reserve System, no
income tax, and no centrally planned war-time economy!

Imagine if Franklin Delano Roosevelt had been familiar with the story. Why, Americans would have gotten no New Deal! There would be no Public Works Administration, Resettlement Administration, Rural Electrification Administration, National Youth Administration, Forest Service and Civilian Conservation Corps, Tennessee Valley Authority, Agriculture Adjustment Administration, Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, Farm Security Administration, Federal Housing Administration, Homeowners Loan Corporation, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or Works Progress Administration. There would be no food stamps, no Social Security, and probably no labor unions. Americans would have to settle for the old deal where they had to work hard, make their own decisions, provide for their own financial security, and save with gold coins instead of paper bills. Who wants to do that?

Of course there is a big difference in scale between the first American socialists and the newer variety. The Pilgrims’ experiment was limited to a small colony so when the model failed the damage was limited to the tiny colonial economy. The ill-effects of the newer forays into socialism modeled after Wilson and FDR’s examples are not contained within a tiny economy – they run rampant through a massive modern economy consisting of hundreds of millions of people.

We never seem to learn the lesson today, either. The Pilgrims abandoned the socialist model when the results clearly indicated failure. Today we implement a new public policy when the results indicate failure. We are always just one public policy fix away.

As we discussed last week in our journal entry examining macroeconomic trends, the sustainability of Pax Americana based on socialist programs is likely coming to an end. Will a transition back to free markets and private property be the solution?

More to come,

Making the Income Tax Fair

submitted by jwithrow.Income Tax Burden

Well tax season is here once again and we have been hearing a lot about the need to make the income tax system more fair and equitable.

We couldn’t help but overhear a woman’s conversation the other day on the subject matter:

“Did you know that Mr. So-and-so’s tax refund was ten thousand dollars!? He doesn’t claim much of his business income but he claims all of his children, can you believe that!? It’s just not fair – that’s exactly what’s wrong with America!”

And that got us to thinking – maybe she is right.

Maybe we do need a more fair income tax.

After all, some people only pay 15% but some people pay 25% and even others pay 35%! And some corporations don’t even pay 10%!

You know what, we agree with our angry woman. We do need to have a more fair income tax!

We think the tax system should be structured based on our American heritage. Our income tax should foster liberty and justice for all. This is the land of the free, is it not?

Our income tax should make sure that every single American shoulders an equal burden, especially the rich! And our income tax should make sure that corporations pay the same amount as people!

Yes, dear friend, having thought it over more we are one hundred percent on board with a fair income tax.

Now we are not sure what our inspirational angry woman had in mind to make taxes more equitable, but we have thought of a pretty good solution.

Get rid of the income tax completely. Make it 0%.

Now it’s fair!

And now it’s modeled after our American founding principles. How can a man be free if he is not allowed to keep the fruits of his labor?

What’s that you say? How will we pay for all of our government operations?

Easy – we won’t. And we shouldn’t.

Oh, and it’s not ‘our’ government. If it were ours then we would be the boss. Instead, the government tags and monitors all of us at all times.

Mr. So-and-so has the right idea.
